Reading for Pleasure in Year 1

As a school, we love to read! - Did you know reading for pleasure is a key indicator of a child's future success? (DfE, 2022).

We want children to love reading and as a school, we try to instil this love from a young age. We have lots of reading events in school and have a wide selection of age-appropriate, diverse children's literature in our classrooms which your child will have the opportunity to read during the school day. Teachers will also read these stories to classes daily. - If you would like to be a guest reader, please let your child's class teacher know as it is great to get parents and family involved in promoting a love of reading!

Each child has been sent home with a reading diary. Reading at home with your children can make a significant difference to their understanding and fluency in reading. As a school, we politely ask that you try and read with your child at least three times a week. Mrs Jones awards special prizes and certificates for children who achieve reading milestones (10,20,50,100 reads!)

We have an amazing school library that each class visits at least once a week. Here, your child can choose from a wide range of books and even borrow one to read at home! Children can only loan one book at a time, so please ensure these books are returned once they have been read. We feel that it is very important for children to be surrounded by a positive reading environment to promote a love of reading!

Each week, your child will be sent home with a Monster Phonics book. These books help support your child in developing their fluency and ability to read confidently whilst also supporting phonetic understanding. Please read these with your child and return them at the beginning of the following week. You can also access these books on the Monster Phonics eBook website. Parents should've recieved an email to set up their account. if you have not recieved this email, please contact your child's class teacher.

Happy reading! - If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesistate to get in touch with your child's class teacher.
