ELSA
At Underwood West Academy, we strive for all our children to be the best version of themselves. Sometimes, things can become a little tricky and support is needed to educate and guide children into a smoother school life, embedding skills to help them cope with challenges life can sometimes give them. This is where I can help.
What does ELSA mean?
ELSA stands for Emotional Literacy Support Assistant.
My name is Miss Hand and I am the ELSA at Underwood West Academy. I am warm and welcoming to all in school and my aim, along with all the Child Centred Team staff, is to make all children feel settled and happy in school so they can reach their full potential.
Areas I can help in
Emotional support can be needed for lots of different reasons. Here are some areas the ELSA can cover –
· Emotional Literacy – understanding of all emotions
· Self Esteem
· Social Skills
· Friendship issues
· Managing our feelings
· Anxiety
· Emotional regulation
What is covered in the sessions?
All children will be encouraged to talk about their talents/characteristics such as ‘kind’, ‘caring’, ‘brave’, ‘helpful’ or ‘supportive’. Activities including art and crafts, playing games to help widen their knowledge and understanding of emotions, colouring in, get to know me, relaxation techniques and reflection will be covered throughout the session. This list is always changing. All children are fully encouraged to find solutions to any problems they have, with full support from the ELSA.
How long does the child see the ELSA for?
When children who are needing support are identified, parents are asked to fill in a consent form to allow the sessions to begin. Sessions last from 6-12 weeks, one per week. Upon completion of the sessions, children are able to access an open-door policy should they need in the future.
